LOCAL FASHION TALENT
Singapore is listed as one of the leading shopping hubs in Asia, through securing and attracting many of the major coveted western brands and retailers – both luxury and high street it does well to cater for the shopaholic, retail loving, money spending individual. There is one thing however I find slightly lacking here and that is a depth in retailer choice, Singapore poorly caters to the more boutique kind of shopper; the vintage obsessed, the custom jewellery fiend, the new-age recycle and revamp fashionistas who regularly take an old vintage shirt and give it new life as a dress. There are no market stalls, minimal independent shops and I found that this type of shopping culture has yet to catch on in this country – probably due to its incredible wealth and obsession with luxury goods here.
All is not lost however as there are a few places you can pick up something a little more unique and less mainstream:
Parco next Next – Parco is a group of shopping malls in Asia – in Singapore it conceptualized and manages Parco next Next, a fashion incubator project that nurtures the next generation of promising Singapore designers. Located in Millenia Walk, Parco next Next houses a diverse collection of local talent and showcases the creativity of the Singapore’s most promising fashion geniuses.
Déjà vu Vintage – This classy vintage boutique has a collection of stylish luxury items from one of a kind casual pieces to special evening dresses, you’ll be sure to find something quirky and quaint to add to your wardrobe.
Dulcetfig Vintage – Located in one of the key areas for finding something a little out of the ordinary, in Haji Lane, Deulcetfig offers a unique collection of vintage second hand dresses and clutches compiled by a nostalgic fashionista Lovie Wong, living in the yesteryears. As well as selling eye catching one off pieces, Dulcetfig also have their own in house brand.
Flea & Easy @ Zouk – This quarterly event attracts every kind of fashion follower to the ultra-trendy club in the day time looking for a pre-loved item to take home to revamp their wardrobe. With over 70 vendors at the event the venue fills with a myriad of handmade accessories stalls, vintage collections and second hand clothes.
